Do I have a problem with alcohol?

Alcohol is so ingrained in our culture that it can sometimes be hard to identify whether you or a loved one starts to have a problem controlling their alcohol consumption.

Risky levels of drinking can have huge impacts on your health, safety, social life and finances. It is important to understand when that casual glass of wine at the weekend, turns into relying on alcohol to get through social events, deal with stressful situations or face the day.

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C)

The AUDIT-C is an alcohol screening tool that can be used to quickly identify risky drinking levels or an alcohol use disorder.

There are three questions, so it only takes a minute or so to complete. It is scored on a scale of 0-12. In men, a score of 4 or more, and in women, a score of 3 or more is considered positive. A positive score means that this person has been identified as a hazardous drinker or has an active alcohol use disorder. The higher the score, the more likely it is that the person is putting their health and safety at risk due to their drinking habits.
